history

From the discovery of the Prince's grave in Wittisling , we know that the place was the seat of a noble family as early as the 7th century. Due to the ending -ingen , the name of the place suggests that the place once had an Alemannic clan leader named Witto or similar. The local Hupaldingers , who were given a county district after the defeat of the Duchy of Alamannien by the Frankish kings, are possibly descendants of this dynasty. After the Hupaldinger in 9./10. Moved from their castle in Wittislingen to their new castle in Dillingen in the 17th century , they called themselves Counts of Dillingen .

From now on, the counts left the place to ministeriales , like the taverns of Wittislingen, who built the castle in the High Middle Ages . In the 13./14. In the 19th century the castle was abandoned and a basilica was built in its place for the village that had arisen around the castle. All that remains of the castle is the keep , which is now used as a church tower.
