Origin of name

The name of the castle does not derive from “fight” or “battle”, as originally assumed, but rather refers to an embankment that is understandable from the proximity of the castle to Brenz . “Schlachtegg” - name interpretation: “Schlacht” = water weir (a. D. Brenz) and “Egg” - typical name of a castle for that time. It was transferred to the settlement as a field name.

Today's “Rosenschloss Schlachtegg” was first mentioned in a document in 1270 as the “Sankt Michaelem” chapel. Instead of the chapel, a St. Catherine's monastery was later built. The secco painting on the walls of the Romanesque church was rediscovered during the renovation.

Between 1553 and 1560, the monastery walls were converted into a Swabian residential palace. In 1555, Schloss Schlachtegg was declared a Palatinate Court Market by Duke Ottheinrich and thus an independent possession independent of the city of Gundelfingen.

The north-east wing with the crenellated gable dates from the construction period around 1566, while the right-angled east-west wing was added in the first half of the 17th century.

Around 1690 a chapel was built into the castle again and consecrated to St. Michael in memory of the old cemetery church. The rococo stucco altar with the altarpiece of the “Annunciation” and the “Michael portrait” were created around 1760. Gothic wall paintings , which were discovered in 1999 during a comprehensive renovation , suggest that the former St. Michael cemetery chapel was in the east-west Wing was integrated. Another altarpiece “Mary and the Child with the Dove” was found during later construction work. It comes from the Franciscan Maria Innocentia Hummel , the creator of the Hummel figures.

Since the founding of Schlachtegg Castle, its heyday and decline have been closely linked to the often changing owners. The castle owners changed frequently, among other things, it was owned by the Count Preysing-Lichtenegg family . After a period as a retirement and nursing home, the castle was left unused to its fate in the 1950s. During this time, the inventory was sold, looted and destroyed, including the house chapel. The rococo altar was preserved as a torso.

In 1992 the castle was uninhabited and run down for years and transformed into a meeting place and creative center for the specialist association of florists of the state associations of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.
