Castle in the Riesebusch

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The castle in the giant bush was a hill fort in the forest giant bush in the area of the city Bad Schwartau in Schleswig-Holstein Ostholstein .

The remains of the 13th century castle are located on a long and narrow ridge of up to 16 meters in height in the northernmost part of the Riesebusch on the so-called "Lange Hörn", surrounded by a bend in the Schwartau river .

For the construction of the castle complex, the top ("long horn") of the ridge was separated and fortified over a length of 500 meters by ramparts and ditches (which can still be seen today) . Because of the steep slopes on the west and east sides of the ridge, no earth-moving fortifications were required. The main castle took up the front about 130 meters of the ridge, the rest of the area formed a bailey .

In 1914 carried out excavations from within were the main castle reading stones existing foundations of the former gatehouse found.

In all probability, the castle was a fortified farm yard of the Bishop of Lübeck . Such a farm on the Schwartau is mentioned in 1215 at the time of Bishop Bertold. The fortification existed until about 1284 until the establishment of the court in Kaltenhof by Bishop Burkhard von Serkem .

The remains of the castle were placed under monument protection in 1990 .
