Castle complex in the Leiberg forest

The castle in the forest Leiberger is the Burgstall an early medieval hill fort , located 1,900 meters south of Bad Wünnenberger hamlet Leiberg in the circle Paderborn in North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany .

location

The Spornburg lies above the confluence of two streams at 380  m above sea level. NHN .

description

The mountain spur on which the system is located drops steeply to the north, east and west. Therefore, the castle is only secured there by - partly double - terrace edges. In the south there is a rampart that is still 2 m high and 119 m long with an outer ditch and passage in the western third. Another wall with an outer ditch is located 130 to 170 m further south. This is still up to 3 m high, up to 10 m wide and 210 m long. The terrace edges, which are also attached to this section wall, are only 20 or 80 m wide. There is a pincer gate in the western third of the southern wall . A passage in the eastern part seems to be more recent.

history

Since neither written sources nor archaeological finds are known about the castle complex, which has not yet been archaeologically examined , it is dated to the 9th or 10th century due to similar structures. Hömberg, however, points out similarities to some late medieval systems.

Todays use

The site of the castle complex is now used as a forest .
