Burghart Schmidt (philosopher)

Burghart Schmidt (born November 30, 1942 in Wildeshausen ) is a German philosopher . He is professor for language and aesthetics at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main and at the University of Applied Arts Vienna .

Life

Burghart Schmidt spent his childhood and school days in Wilhelmshaven . From 1962 to 1970 he studied biology , chemistry , physics and then philosophy and art history at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . He was a long-time employee of Ernst Bloch , about whom he later published numerous publications, including the standard work Ernst Bloch (1985). From 1968 to 1977 he worked as a research assistant for the philosopher in the publication of his complete works in the Suhrkamp publishing house . After completing his doctorate with the dissertation The Resistance of Reality in the Work Structure of Recognition on the Method Problem of Practice-Oriented Knowledge in 1982 at the University of Tübingen for Dr. phil. He completed his habilitation in 1984 with the thesis Critique of Pure Utopia - a socio-philosophical investigation in the field of the effectiveness of anticipatory consciousness at the University of Hanover . In 1986 he became President of the Ernst Bloch Society and in 2006 he became Honorary President.

Schmidt taught from 1971 to 1975 at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal , from 1975 to 1997 at the University of Hanover, whose architecture faculty appointed him honorary professor after his habilitation in 1985 . He took on further teaching activities in Vienna : from 1977 to 1997 at the University of Applied Arts and from 1983 to 1997 at the Academy of Fine Arts . Since 1997 he has been professor for language and aesthetics at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main and is its vice-president.

From 1984 to 1997 he worked as a visiting professor at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt , and from 1991/1992 at the Graz University of Technology , at the University of Applied Arts and at the International Center for Culture and Management (ICCM) Salzburg.

Burghart Schmidt has lived in Offenbach am Main and Vienna since 1997.

Fonts

As a student and employee of Ernst Bloch, Burghart Schmidt supervised a large part of his work by Ernst Bloch and published it in Suhrkamp-Verlag as well as wrote secondary literature about it. Schmidt later dealt with the phenomenon of postmodernism. Current focal points are the importance of the image in art and media studies as well as ornament.
