The ruins of Rotenberg or Burg Rotenberg , French. Château de Rougemont is the ruin of a hilltop castle near Rougemont-le-Château in the Territoire de Belfort on a plateau at the southern foot of the Vosges in Sundgau .

history

The castle was built by the Counts of Pfirt and came to the Habsburgs after they became extinct in 1324 . With the death of Johann IV (Habsburg-Laufenburg) , the rule of Rotenberg and Burg passed to the Counts of Sulz . The castle was probably destroyed around 1375 by the troops of Enguerrand VII. De Coucy .

Restorations and excavations

In 1977 the entire complex was excavated archaeologically, the finds are exhibited in the museum in Belfort . The ruins are freely accessible and have been a listed building since 1996.
