Rundersburg Castle

The Castle Square Castle is the ruins of a hilltop castle northwest of St. Leonhard am Hornerwald in Waldviertel in Lower Austria .

history

Around 1182/1189, Albero de Ronnenberg, a sovereign ministerial, was named in a document as a benefactor in favor of the Benedictine priest in Göttweig . In 1194 Ulrich von “Ronenberch” appeared, around 1196/1231 Ortolf (I.) v. "Roneberch". In a Lilienfeld document from around 1266–1293 a younger Ortolf - around 1270 together with Albert, Dietrich and Trauslieb - was mentioned several times in Altenburger, Heiligenkreuzer, Lilienfelder and St. Bernharder documents. He was the last detectable Ronberger, with him the family in the male line should have died out. The castle lost its seat function a little later and fell into disrepair. The property fell to the sovereign rule in Gars and finally in 1681 to the Idolsberg rule . In 1895 the extensive forest property was acquired by the Count Hoyos-Sprinzenstein . The facility is now privately owned.

Location and building description

The Runderburg is located opposite the Schauenstein Castle , 3.2 km northwest of St. Leonhard am Hornerwald on the densely wooded, left valley slope of the Franbach, which drains to the Kamp. The name Rundersburg (Ronnenberg) comes from the Middle High German word Rone for round and could be traced back to the shape of the terrain on which the former castle is located.

In the center of the hill is the remainder of a rectangular residential tower about 10 m wide in the south. The castle chapel of the same time is located on a terrace that is located on the ground. Both structures and the curtain wall are likely to have been built shortly before they were first mentioned in a document.
