The Schonenburg castle ruins are the ruins of a medieval hilltop castle above the Kamp River in the municipality of Schönberg am Kamp in the Krems-Land district in Lower Austria . The castle ruins are under monument protection .

history

A Heinricus de Sconiberch can be found as early as 1122/25 among the witnesses of a document in the Göttweiger tradition book. He was a ministerial of the Babenbergermarkgraf Leopold III. and should have been a member of the extensive Kuenringer family. For the next five generations this was the owner of the estate, which she owned as a free property.

Under the Habsburg Albrecht III. The castle was taken repeatedly, but remained in the possession of the Schönbergers until they died out in 1387. The Habsburgs enfeoffed Leopold von Eckartsau, after which the ownership changed repeatedly. From 1635 it was owned by the court chancellor Johann Baptist Verda von Verdenberg , the owner of Grafenegg at the time , who had the building repaired. As part of a Fideikommiss , both gentlemen remained united. However, Schönberg Castle was partially destroyed by the Swedes in 1645 and then not rebuilt.

However, its structure can still be clearly seen in the Vischer engraving from 1672. The complex was finally destroyed in 1778, when the residents of the area demolished the buildings in order to obtain building material for their houses. Today there is a pavilion in the former castle courtyard, from which one has a beautiful view of the Kamptal.
