Burkard of Beinwil
Burkard von Beinwil (* around 1120 on the Langenmatt farm near Muri AG ; † around May 18, 1192 in Beinwil ) was a Swiss priest in the Aargau Freiamt , who is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church .
Burkard, who was trained in the Muri monastery , worked as a priest in Beinwil in the second half of the 12th century and is said to have performed many miraculous acts. His grave in the parish church of St. Burkard in Beinwil has been a destination for pilgrimages since the 13th century (since 1620 in a crypt specially built for this purpose ). His worship was especially important in the Middle Ages and in the early modern period. Today there is a procession every year on the weekend before Pentecost .
Burkard is iconographically represented as a priest with a chalice or a bird (probably a crane or a jackdaw ). After the parish had made him the first patron saint of the parish church in 1808 , the Holy See gave permission in 1817 to read Holy Mass in his honor.
