Burkhard Balz (born July 24, 1969 in Lemgo ) is a German politician ( CDU ). From July 2009 to August 2018 he was a member of the European Parliament for the Hanover region, the districts of Diepholz, Hameln-Pyrmont, Nienburg and Schaumburg. He has been a member of the board of the Deutsche Bundesbank since September 1, 2018 .

His main topics include the new European banking supervision , the capital requirements for insurance companies ( Solvency II ) and the monitoring of rating agencies .

Life and work

After graduating from high school in Stadthagen in 1988 , he did his basic military service at the Heeresfliegerwaffenschule in Achum . After an apprenticeship as a bank clerk in Hanover from 1989 to 1991, he began studying law and political science at the Georg-August University in Göttingen , which he graduated with the first state examination in 2000 .

Since 2000 he has been employed by Commerzbank in Hanover, Frankfurt am Main, Tokyo, London and Brussels, most recently as head of department in Hanover until he took up his mandate as a member of the European Parliament until July 2009.

Balz has been married to his wife Susanne since 1996 and has had a son with her since 2001.

Political party

Burkhard Balz became a member of the Junge Union in Schaumburg in July 1985 and later became district chairman. He has been with the CDU since 1989 . From 1991 to 2011 he was a member of the district council of the Schaumburg district and from 1991 to 2015 councilor of the city of Stadthagen . From 2002 to 2006 Balz held the office of district chairman of the CDU Schaumburg. Since 2003 he has been the deputy district chairman of the CDU Hanover. Since August 2010 he has been a member of the state board of the CDU Lower Saxony .

MEP

After the 2009 European elections , Balz was a member of the European Parliament for the 7th and 8th electoral term .

Balz was a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON). He was a full member of the European Parliament delegation to the ASEAN countries (DASE) and a deputy member of the European Parliament delegation to the People's Republic of China (D-CN).

From 2009 to 2011 he was a member of the European Parliament's special committee on the financial, economic and social crisis . Balz also negotiated the compromise on the three future EU supervisory agencies for banks, insurance companies and securities dealers with central access rights, which made it possible to monitor the rating agencies and was involved in regulating hedge funds after the financial crisis .

He was the parliamentary rapporteur for the new capital requirements for insurance companies in Europe and for the introduction of the euro in Latvia .

In September 2018, Stefan Gehrold succeeded him as a member of the EU Parliament .

Memberships

Balz was a member of the Europa-Union parliamentary group European Parliament .

Since 2007 he has been a member of the supervisory board of the German investment company Apaton Capital AG, based in Hanover. In addition, he has been the shop steward of Bausparkasse Schwäbisch Hall AG since April 2012 .

Balz is a member of the Economic Council of the CDU and of the German Parliamentary Society .

Balz is also a member of the Kangaroo Group , a think tank and lobby organization based in Brussels.
