Burkhard Thiele

Burkhard Thiele (born March 5, 1953 in Hamburg ) is a German judge. From 2008 to 2018 he was President of the Rostock Higher Regional Court . On January 25, 2017, he was elected President of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Constitutional Court by the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Parliament.

Life

After studying law, Thiele completed his legal clerkship in the judiciary of Schleswig-Holstein . With effect from October 1, 1980, he was appointed as a judge on probation . On February 21, 1985, Thiele was appointed judge at the regional court, in which capacity he worked at the regional court in Kiel . Subsequently he worked for several years at the Kiel Ministry of Justice. With effect from May 8, 1989, Thiele was appointed judge at the Schleswig Higher Regional Court. However, he did not work in this role for long. After the reunification of Germany , the Schleswig-Holstein judiciary took on a sponsorship of the judiciary that was to be established in the newly created state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . As part of this sponsorship, Thiele moved to the Schwerin Ministry of Justice in November 1990 at the age of 37 as head of the constitution and law department. In this function he was a government representative of the constitutional commission of the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. As co-editor and co-author of the first commentary on this new state constitution, Thiele is one of the fathers of this constitution. In 1999 the Ministry of Justice of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania also appointed Thiele as President of the State Judicial Examination Office. After 13 years in the administration of justice, Thiele then switched to specialized jurisdiction in 2003, and on July 1, 2003, he was appointed President of the State Labor Court in Rostock . While still in this position, Thiele was elected Vice President of the State Constitutional Court of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on January 30, 2008 by the state parliament. In the same year he returned to the Ordinary Court. With effect from September 1, 2008, the then Justice Minister Uta-Maria Kuder appointed him President of the Rostock Higher Regional Court. On January 25, 2017, the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania elected him as the new president of the state constitutional court to succeed Hannelore Kohl . At the end of October 2018, he retired as President of the Higher Regional Court.

On May 15, 2020, the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania elected the vice-president of the Higher Regional Court of Rostock Monika Köster-Flachsmeyer zu Thiele's successor as president of the state constitutional court of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
