Bury St Edmunds locally also short Bury called, is a city ( town ) in the County (county) Suffolk , England . Originally called Beodericsworth , the city is the capital of the district of West Suffolk (until 2019 the district of St Edmundsbury ) and the spiritual center of East Anglia .
The city is nationally established for the downtown ruins of the early 11th century Benedictine - Bury St Edmunds Abbey known. The abbey in which the last Anglo-Saxon king Edmund is buried (killed by Ivar Ragnarsson in 869 ) developed into an important place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages . Bury St Edmunds is important to the history of the Magna Carta : English barons met in the abbey church in 1214 and swore an oath to force King John Ohneland to grant basic freedoms to the nobility.
The city grew around the abbey and developed into a fabric manufacturing city in the 14th century. The abbey itself was largely destroyed by the dissolution of the monastery in the 16th century; Nevertheless, despite its rural location, the place continued to develop into a flourishing and prosperous city in the 17th and 18th centuries. This development was only to change with the start of the industrial revolution . The city suffered a decline and then developed into a market town.
From 1913 a cathedral ( St Edmundsbury Cathedral ) was built next to the abbey . In the 1960s, the church building at the eastern end was expanded or renewed. A new tower ( Millennium Tower ) was built by 2004 . The construction of the church was completed on July 22, 2005 with a solemn service, which was also attended by the British heir to the throne, Charles and Camilla . This gives Bury St Edmunds the only 21st century cathedral in Great Britain .
The town has a small Regency- era theater . Every year in May, Bury St Edmunds holds a festival, which is accompanied by concerts, games and dancing and ends with fireworks . The place is also known for the Greene King Brewery , which originally brewed beer for the British who were expatriated to India.
Bury St Edmunds is twinned with the German pilgrimage town of Kevelaer .
