Busso VIII of Alvensleben (* between 1455 and 1460; † October 13, 1493 ) was Bishop of Havelberg from 1487 to 1493 .

Life

Busso VIII von Alvensleben came from the Low German noble family von Alvensleben . He was born around 1455–1460 as the fourth son of Ludolf IV von Alvensleben from Kalbe (Milde) and Anna von Bülow. As a young man he devoted himself to the sciences, studying in Rostock in 1476 , in Leipzig from 1477–1478 and law from 1480 in Bologna , where he obtained his doctorate in both rights in 1484. He was probably the first member of his family to study and obtain a doctorate.

Just three years later he was elected Bishop of Havelberg by the cathedral chapter on the recommendation of the elector . With a document dated May 4, 1488, he gave the council of Wittstock / Dosse back the right to confirm the guilds and trades that his predecessor, Bishop Wedego , had taken from the city. In coordination with the dukes of Mecklenburg, he took action against the robber nuisance. On December 13, 1492, he wrote to the Dukes Magnus and Balthasar of Mecklenburg that he was tired of any robbery: he asked for details of the perpetrators and their protectors. One of them had already been executed in Wittstock. On May 17, 1493, he approved the construction of the infirmary chapel in Neuruppin and its use as a church.

Little is known about his other work, because he died very young on the night of October 12th to 13th, 1493 and was buried in the Havelberg Cathedral , where his tombstone is today behind the main altar.
