Wedigo goose from Putlitz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wedigo Gans Edler von Putlitz (* before 1438; † January 29, 1487 on the Plattenburg ) was a 15th century Roman Catholic bishop of Havelberg from the Prignitz noble family Gans zu Putlitz .

Life

Wedigo Gans Edler zu Putlitz was the son of Achim Gans and his wife Katharina. Wedigo entered after studies at the University of Rostock , where he matriculated in 1448, and at the University of Leipzig (matriculated in 1452) in 1458 in the cathedral chapter of the diocese of Havelberg . In 1459 he became the altarist at the altar of the town church in Havelberg and in autumn that year he was rector of the castle chapel in Wittstock . In 1460, after Bishop Konrad von Lintorff's resignation, he was elected bishop by the Havelberg Cathedral Chapter on the proposal of Elector Albrecht Achilles of Brandenburg and confirmed by the Pope. His careful administration as bishop was overshadowed by his worldly interests. In accordance with his time and his origins from the Brandenburg nobility, as a regional power politician, he was secularly a man of the knightly feud that he upheld throughout his life, especially with the neighboring dukes of Mecklenburg .

In these conflicts he was sometimes classified as a robber baron because of his unyielding harshness , although he actually countered these in Brandenburg rather militantly. He enjoyed the benevolence of Margrave Johann Cicero , because the excavation of robber barons' castles of the rural aristocracy in the area helped to secure the trade routes and pilgrimage routes to the economically important Wilsnack . In the summer of 1477, Bishop Wedigo was captured by Duke Johann II of Sagan and first arrested in Sprottau , then in Freystadt Castle in Lower Silesia. He was only released in the spring of 1478 for a ransom of 1000 guilders . The Elector of Brandenburg compensated for the ransom with a ferry justice across the Rhin near Fehrbellin , from whose income Wedigo was able to recover financially.
