The butter Point is a flat promontory on the Scott Coast of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . It marks the south side of the entrance to the New Harbor , the confluence of the Ferrar Glacier in McMurdo Sound .
The cape was discovered by participants in the Discovery Expedition (1901-1904) led by the British polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott . It was named after the part of the crew who explored the Ferrar Glacier during the expedition left a tin of butter at this point with the intention of using it on the return march to prepare fresh seal meat.
