Buttons and Bows is a song from the soundtrack of the American western comedy His Angel with the Two Guns . The song, composed by Jay Livingston and written by Ray Evans , was published in 1947. It was written for the aforementioned film with Bob Hope and Jane Russell . It is sung by Bob Hope in the film, as well as by Jane Russell. In 1949 it won an Oscar in the “Best Song” category. It was originally intended for another film, which broke up, whereupon it was changed again to be used in the aforementioned film. It was heard from many different performers on radio programs after its appearance. The song was also sung in the sequel to His Angel with the Two Pistols , Pale Face Junior from 1952, again with Bob Hope and Jane Russell and, for the first time, Roy Rogers . Livingston and Evans were the "big" songwriting couple in Hollywood in the 1940s and 1950s .

In 2004 the song was listed at number 87 among the AFI 100 Years ... 100 Songs.

Dinah Shore sang the most popular and successful version of the song, recorded in 1947, which hit the charts the following year. The Dinning Sisters, Betty Jane Rhodes, Evelyn Ritter and Betty Garrett covered the song that same year. The song was also recorded by Gene Autry and Geraldo and his orchestra.

Dinah Shore's version was recorded on November 30, 1947 and published by Columbia . Their version first reached number 1 on the Billboard charts in September 1948 and stayed there for 25 weeks. In addition, Shore was with the song in other countries at the top of the charts.

The Dinning Sisters version was recorded on December 29, 1947 and published by Capitol . In October 1948 this version was listed at number 5 on the Billboard charts and stayed in the highscore list for a total of 16 weeks. Betty Garrett recorded her version on December 29, 1947, released by MGM Records , and ranked 27th as the best in November 1948; it stayed on the Billboard charts for two weeks. Betty Jane Rhodes' version, created in collaboration with RCA Victor Records , reached number 9 on the Billboard charts in November 1948 and stayed in the rankings for nine weeks. Evelyn Ritter recorded her version on November 29, 1947, published by Decca Records and landed at number 14 on the Billboard charts in November 1948, where she was able to stay for eight weeks. Art Mooney , who also recorded the song, was listed at number 8 on the US Billboard charts in 1948 and remained on the charts for 11 weeks.

Gene Autry recorded his version in December 1947 and was published by Columbia. It reached number 1 on the charts in Australia and remained on the list for twelve weeks, and was listed on the US Billboard charts for three weeks. Bob Hope and The Clark Sisters followed suit on October 14, 1948 and recorded their version at Capitol. Hope's 1948 version was number 1 in Australia for twelve weeks and number 17 on the US Billboard charts for three weeks. The version by Geraldo and his orchestra with the vocals of Doreen Lundy was recorded on November 10, 1948 and published by Parlophone . Another version from 1948 exists by Evelyn Knight. On the 1948 Bob Hope Show, Bing Crosby and Doris Day parodied the song. Bing Crosby recorded the song separately in 1948.

Connie Francis covered the song in April 1962. She recorded her version on RCA at Italiana Studios in Rome . Tommy Bruce also contributed his version of Buttons and Bows in 1962 . Country singer Lynn Anderson sang the song on the Lawrence Welk Show. Gisele MacKenzie and Miyoshi Umeki also offered a version of the song. Bob Hope sang Buttons and Bows in 1987/1988 with Dolly Parton .

At the time of its publication, other more or less famous artists tried on the song, but without particularly standing out. The song was also used in various US series and US commercials.
