Celestine Flottwell

Cölestin Flottwell (born April 5, 1711 in Königsberg i. Pr. , † January 2, 1759 ibid) was a German German philologist . He worked as a teacher and university professor in Königsberg.

Life

Flottwell studied Classical Philology at the Albertus University in Königsberg . In 1737 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD . In the (highly political) orthodox-liberal theologian dispute over Lutheranism and Pietism , he said on April 2, 1739: "The theological faculty is racing, and the Spanish Inquisition is still milder than it is."

At Johann Christoph Gottsched's instigation, he founded the Royal German Society (Königsberg) in 1741 . He presented her with a plan for a German dictionary . In 1750 he became rector of the cathedral school , the oldest school in East Prussia . At the Albertus University he was a professor of rhetoric . In December 1755 he became an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg . He died at the age of 48.
