Hockey has a long and varied tradition in Köthen. In 1937 the hockey club merged with the “Sportverein Köthen 02” to form the “Köthener Sportverein CFC 02”. In 1945 several sports clubs were united under the occupation forces , and the hockey club joined the "Sportgemeinschaft Köthen-West". In 1950 soccer players, handball players and hockey players formed the company sports group "BSG Union Köthen". In the following years the association was called "BSG Motor Köthen", before the traditional name CHC 02 was adopted again after the fall of the Wall . Between 1949 and 1990 the club won the GDR championship in field and indoor hockey a total of fourteen times in the women's and men's field. 25 players were appointed to the GDR national hockey team during this time.

The men's team played in the 1st Bundesliga in the hall in the 2012/2013 season, but had to be relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga as bottom of the table. In the field, the CHC 02 plays in the Regionalliga Ost. The women's team is in the upper division both in the field and in the hall.

The club provides a total of 10 youth teams, which are among the most successful in East Germany. Cöthen boys' or youth teams often qualify as winners of the Central German youth leagues, for the intermediate round of the German championship (field) or for the (north) east German championship (hall). The current national player Martin Zwicker , who currently (2016) has 183 appearances for the national team , comes from the youth of the Cöthener hockey club. He is the son of the former GDR national player Detlef Zwicker from Köthen. Martin Zwicker was vice world champion in field hockey 2010 in New Delhi and bronze medalist at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro . Another active Köthen national player is Hannes Müller , who currently (2017) plays for UHC Hamburg in the U-21 national team and was nominated for the U-21 European Championship.

In the 2016/2017 indoor season, the club's 1st men's team was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga . In the 2016/2017 field season, however, she narrowly missed promotion to the East German Regionalliga (3rd division) and continued to play in the 2017/2018 field season in the Central German Oberliga. In January 2020, the 1st men's team was promoted from the 2nd to the 1st indoor hockey Bundesliga .
