The CINEMA-Filmtheater at Nymphenburger Straße 31 is an art house cinema in the Maxvorstadt district of Munich , which specializes in the presentation of films in the original version and live broadcasts.

history

The CINEMA was opened on October 23, 1954 and was one of the most modern German movie theaters of the post-war period. The curved canopy in the style of the 1950s has been preserved to this day.

When it opened, the film theater offered space for 580 people. The attractive balcony gives the hall its exclusive charm to this day and the renovated cinema currently has a capacity of 411 seats.

Under the direction of Dieter Buchwald, the CINEMA has achieved a leading status in the German cinema industry in terms of modern cinema technology since the late 1970s. From 1992 Buchwald was also the initiator and co-operator of the first German IMAX theater in the Forum der Technik in the Deutsches Museum , Munich, and operator of the Discovery Channel IMAX theater on Potsdamer Platz, Berlin.

In 1987 the CINEMA was the first certified THX cinema in Germany, and in 2005 the country's first digitally projected 3D film was shown here. Since April 25, 2016 the CINEMA has been equipped with DOLBY Atmos sound technology.

At the end of the 1970s, CINEMA was also the first art house cinema in Germany where you could buy popcorn . The cinema snack is still prepared by the employees in several flavors.

There was also the City of Munich's Cinema Program Award several times . The Munich Film Festival and the Fantasy Film Festival also made guest appearances at CINEMA.

Currently it is still the films in their original version (OV), sneak previews and the live broadcasts (from the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the National Theater in London, among others ) that are popular with the public.
