Apparently there had been problems between de Vries and coach Cor Brom .

His coach at De Graafschap at the time, Piet de Visser , emphasized after De Vries' death: “Chris should get away from Vitesse, so I got him quickly. I haven't regretted that for a second, because he was a great model footballer. ”In 1973 de Vries helped the Doetinchem team to gain their first promotion to the Eredivisie. At the club from the Achterhoek he let his active career end in 1975.

At the same time, de Vries ran a liquor store and after 1975 also the De Graafschap canteen. He later worked for many years as a scout for Vitesse. In 2000 the association named him Zilveren Vitessenaar ("Silver Vitessener"). The former board member of the Arnhem Club Jan Snellenberg brought the KNVB trophy , which Vitesse won for the first time the day after de Vries' death , to his funeral.
