The CP series 9600 is a two-part diesel multiple unit series of the Portuguese state railway Comboios de Portugal . The series produced in 1976/77 was used exclusively on the relatively large meter gauge network of Portugal , especially in the Porto area , until 2002 . All vehicles have now been sold to Argentina and Cameroon .

history

To replace the train sets of locomotives and passenger coaches on the Portuguese meter-gauge lines, the Portuguese state railway Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses ordered a new diesel multiple unit series in 1975. The order for 22 vehicles was awarded to the French rail vehicle company Alsthom . The vehicles went into operation in 1976 and 1977. The CP initially used these on the two suburban railway lines between Porto to Póvoa de Varzim ( Linha da Póvoa ) and Guimarães ( Linha de Guimarães ). For the time, the vehicles were considered disproportionately modern.

Since the 22 vehicles did not meet the demand, especially on the Linha da Póvoa, the CP purchased seven similar railcars of the 9630 series built in Portugal in 1991 .

The CP used the wagons until the end of the Portuens meter gauge network in 2002. While the 9630 series vehicles also used went to Linha do Vouga , the 9600 series vehicles remained in the EMEF depots in Guifões , as they were initially not used.

Whereabouts

Since there was no longer any use for the wagons in Portugal due to the almost complete closure of the meter-gauge network, the Portuguese State Railways decided to sell them. Five vehicles went to the Cameroonian railway company Camrail for 4.7 million euros , and CP sold seventeen vehicles to the Argentine company Ferrocentral .

The vehicles in Cameroon do their service on the Douala - Yaoundé route as "Intercité". To this end, they have been modernized, including air conditioning, and are considered to be the trains with the best equipment. One of the vehicles sold to Argentina also received a modernization, which was carried out by Emepa . These have been used on the Córdoba – Cruz del Eje (“Tren de las Sierras”) railway since 2007 . The other vehicles are meanwhile unused and, according to media research, can hardly be used.
