history

On January 28, 1856, the youth clubs from Berlin , Brandenburg , Frankfurt (Oder) , Genthin , Halle , Prenzlau , Rathenow , Wernigerode and Ziesar founded the Eastern Youth Union as a supra-regional union. Its statutory tasks lay in the networking of the individual local associations, the establishment and support of the existing groups and in the promotion of the Christian hostel system. In 1894 the Ostbund acquired the house at 19 Sophienstrasse in Berlin.

In 1906 the federal government had 499 member associations, including 11 YMCA. The focus of work was group lessons, trombone choir work, gymnastics groups, scout work and the pastoral care of soldiers.

During the Weimar Republic , the jointly organized youth work and, with the global economic crisis , the organization of unemployment training camps emerged. After the takeover of the NSDAP many employees welcomed the new development next to large sectors of society. At the latest with the integration of the Protestant youth into the Hitler Youth in spring 1934, however, it became clear that the initial euphoria was to have serious consequences. The work with close ties to the Confessing Church could only be continued until 1945 with severe restrictions .

However, the Soviet occupation authorities prevented the Ostwerk from continuing its work after the end of World War II. It was only with the connection to the Protestant Church that the Evangelical Young Men’s Work, as the Ostwerk was officially called since 1946, was able to perform its specific tasks in the pastoral care of boys and young men as well as in evangelistic missionary preaching within church youth work. After the introduction of compulsory military service in the GDR, the "Advice Center for Military Service Issues" set up by the Jungmännerwerk became an important branch of work .

After the German reunification, the Evangelical Jungmannwerk had to be liquidated and was re-established as the CVJM-Ostwerk eV. In 2006 the Ostwerk celebrated its 150th anniversary. There are 33 local YMCA associations in Berlin and Brandenburg.

Cooperations

In 2013, the association is a cooperation partner for Christmas in a shoebox for the first time . The chief secretary of the YMCA Berlin, Reinhard Kubbutat, said about the cooperation: “Gifts of hope and the YMCA are natural partners, because they pursue the same goal. We want children all over the world to see a light this Christmas. We want the children to feel that they are important to us and that we value them. That is what we as YMCA do here in Berlin and Brandenburg and that's what gifts of hope do in many countries around the world. ”The YMCA Ostwerk called on its local associations to participate in the campaign.
