Ca 'Zenobio degli Armeni

Ca 'Zenobio degli Armeni is a palace in Venice in the Veneto region of Italy . It is located in the Sestiere Dorsoduro on the Fondamento del Soccorso on the route between Campo dei Carmini and Campo San Sebastian , a few steps from Palazzo Ariani Minotto Cicogna and Palazzo Foscarini .

history

The project was realized in the 17th and 18th centuries by Antonio Gaspari (a colleague of the more famous architect Baldassare Longhena ). Today's Ca 'Zenobio degli Armeni was built on the basis of an earlier Gothic building that had been the seat of the aristocratic Zenobio family , who came from the province of Verona , since 1664 . They were the commissioners of the new palace and it is from them that its name is derived.

In the middle of the 19th century, this noble family died out, their property passed to the Albrizzi and became the seat of the Armenian Mechitarist Order in Venice, from which the second part of the name of the palace is derived.

In the first years of the 20th century the building was restored by the architect Vincenzo Rinaldo .

Today the palace is still owned by the Armenians and is partly used for exhibitions, concerts and receptions.

Well-known music videos were filmed in the lavish baroque halls of the palace: In 1984 the video for Like a Virgin by Madonna was shot there and in 2004 the video clip Vivimi by Laura Pausini .

description

Outside

Ca 'Zenobio degli Armeni is a baroque building with an important facade that stretches along the canal that connects the Carmine Church with the Church of the Archangel Raphael . This facade, which extends over three full floors and a mezzanine floor under the roof and has a strict symmetry, impresses with its length and the many window openings: There are 46 individual windows and three entrances on the ground floor as well as the multiple windows in the middle of the two main floors ; the first floor is adorned with a Venetian window with a mascaron , while on the second floor there are three rectangular openings in a stone frame, crowned by an arched tympanum that occupies the mezzanine.

A large garden extends to the rear of the building as far as the Karminer complex; this free space fits the U-shaped floor plan of the palace, delimited by the two side wings that extend from the main block of the building to the rear and one of which houses the library , among other things . Two Venetian windows are attached to the garden facade, which are located in the middle, higher part and culminate in a roof.

Inside

The interiors include the following of the numerous, rich details:

  • The Sala degli Specchi (English: Hall of Mirrors) is the most important room in the palace; it contains frescoes by Louis Dorigny (who also painted the frescoes in Ca 'Tron ), in which Giambattista Tiepolo was also involved.
  • The Sala degli Stucchi (German: stucco room ) with frescoes by Gregorio Lazzarini , embellished with those by Luca Carlevarijs .
  • The chapel : a small, religious building, originally the private chapel of Zenobios , housed within the walls of the palace and in which a large part of the equipment from the 18th century is preserved.
