General

Seat of government until 1997, Cabildo Viejo

Like all Cabildos in the Canary Islands , the Cabildo was introduced by Lanzarote in 1912 after the Cabildo Act ( Ley de Cabildos in Spanish ) came into force. The composition is determined by a democratic election. The island government of Lanzarote now performs its own tasks below the level of the province of Las Palmas and above the level of the municipal administrations of the seven island communities Arrecife , Haría , Teguise , Tinajo , San Bartolomé , Tías and Yaiza . These tasks were re-regulated in Law 14/1990 of July 26, 1990. The administrative area also includes the islands of the Chinijo archipelago with the only inhabited island of La Graciosa .

The current seat of government was moved into in 1997. The previous building from 1929 is located in the center of Arrecife in the pedestrian street Calle Leon y Castillo . It was restored and on August 4th 2014 the Memorial Digital was opened, an archive that digitizes the past of Lanzarote. There is also a tourist information office in the building, which was declared a monument in 1997.
