The supermarket chain Cactus is one of the most important family businesses in Luxembourg . It operates, among other things, under the brands "Cactus", "Super Cactus" and "Cactus Marché", supermarkets , hypermarkets and food retail outlets .

The Cactus Group employs 3,960 people (as of January 1, 2013), making it Luxembourg's third largest private employer after ArcelorMittal and BGL BNP Paribas .

history

In 1900 Joseph Leesch founded a grocery store, which he and Michel Donven expanded in 1905 into a wholesale business for colonial goods . The collaboration ended in 1928 and Leesch founded a new company called "Leesch Frères" together with his three sons Arthur, Jacques and Aloyse. In 1930 he founded a coffee roastery on Rue de Strasbourg in Luxembourg City .

In 1955, Arthur Leesch's sons, Paul and Alfred, the third generation of the family, took over the business. In 1962 she opened the first self-service shop on Rue de Strasbourg under the name “VIVO” (United International Sales Organization). A coffee shop followed in 1966.

The first supermarket under the name Cactus was opened in Bereldange in 1967 , the second one year later in the Brill district in Esch an der Alzette . In 1972 a second supermarket followed in Esch.

In 1974 the company opened its first shopping mall , the “Belle Etoile Shopping Center” in Bertrange. Other supermarkets followed in various cities in Luxembourg. In 1979 the company's first delicatessen store opened under the name “ Schnékert ” in Luxembourg (city).

In 1989 the Cactus Howald shopping center opened with the first Free Flow Restaurant . In the same year the company moved to a newly built company headquarters in Windhof.

In 1994 and 1995 the first DIY stores were opened under the name "Cactus Hobbi" in Howald, Diekirch and Esch.

In 2001 Paul Leesch retired from the business. His son, Max Leesch, took over the chairmanship of the newly created seven-member board of directors. Laurent Schonckert is the general director .

In 2009 a “Cactus-Kaart” customer card was introduced, with which you can collect one bonus point for every euro you spend. From 500 points you can redeem them for bonuses.
