Cadmium bromide , CdBr 2 , is a chemical compound of cadmium and bromine .
Extraction and presentation
Cadmium bromide can be prepared from the elements at elevated temperatures.
Furthermore, it can also be produced by dissolving cadmium in hydrobromic acid and then crystallizing it.
properties
Cadmium bromide is present as colorless, hexagonal, pearly shimmering flakes and is very hygroscopic. It has a crystal structure of the cadmium chloride type (a = 398.5, c = 1884 pm). From a solution of cadmium bromide in water, the monohydrate crystallizes above 36 ° C, and below this temperature the tetrahydrate crystallizes.
use
Cadmium bromide is used as a raw material for the production of cadmium - tungsten- bromide complex compounds . Earlier it was also used for making silver bromide - gelatin for photographic images used.
