The Kaffee Alt Wien is a coffee house in the 1st district of Vienna, Innere Stadt, at Bäckerstraße 9.
history
The Kaffee Alt Wien was opened in 1936 by Leopold Hawelka and his wife Josefine one day after their wedding. They ran Kaffee Alt Wien until 1939 , then moved to Dorotheergasse and took over Café Ludwig there , which is now known as Café Hawelka .
In 1976, a notable campaign by the Viennese artist Gottfried Helnwein took place in Alt Wien . Since the 1980s, the restaurant has developed into a night café. Due to the opening times, but also the appearance with many posters on the walls and subdued lighting, the boundaries between traditional coffee houses and bars are now blurred. The sparse illumination contrasts with most of the other coffee houses, where, for example, a lighter atmosphere is created through generous windows. The Alt Wien is frequented by artists, writers and journalists, among others. The house specialty is goulash .
