The Cagey Strings are a rock 'n' roll and party band from Munich, founded in 1982 . The formation's repertoire includes cover versions of rock, pop and party classics as well as their own titles. In addition to national and international appearances, the band has been playing at the Oktoberfest in the Hacker festival tent since 1996 .

history

founding

The four-piece band was founded in 1982 by Georg ("Schorsch") Angerer. In 1976 he was particularly inspired by the internationally successful German “Bill Haley”, Paul Würges and his band. In 1978, with the help of his music teacher, Angerer met the then twelve-year-old drummer Werner Heizenreder. In the following years, the two got to know the guitarist and pianist Bernd Bircks, as well as the bassist and accordionist Paul Kreil at their school, the Moosacher Gymnasium. During this time the band played at school events and parties.

In 1982 they appeared for the first time under the name Cagey Strings at a music competition in Munich-Schwabing, where they took 2nd place. From then on, the four students made numerous appearances. After graduating from high school, the band decided to make music professionally. In 1985 Paul Kreil left the Cagey Strings to pursue his studies. Bassist Peter Biermeier, who was a member of the band until December 31, 2017, joined him in the autumn of the same year.

Band name

The name Cagey Strings was created in 1982 by Schorsch Angerer with the help of his Langenscheidt dictionary. The word Cagey actually means "torn", in the sense of "clever", but is interpreted by the band as broken strings.

First records and successes

In 1986 the Cagey Strings won the Munich district competition and won two days of recording in the Downtown Studio. Two tracks were recorded: the Bernd Spier song Without a specific goal and the Bernd Bircks composition Superkarrn . In the same year the band met their future producer Harald Steinhauer and the manager Jürgen Thürnau. A first album followed in 1989, which contained songs by Steinhauer, who - together with Spider Murphy Gang - drummer Franz Trojan - also produced the album. The album and the three single releases were successful. In 1990 the band made more than 20 television appearances, including in programs such as ZDF Hitparade, Formula 1 and Schlagerparade. The songs got good airplay on many radio stations, the tracks 1000 times in my dreams and Tonight were found on various compilations that sold a total of over a million times. In 1992, the band released their second album, hot like fire , which was also well received by radio stations - and so provided the formation with many appearances.

Later occupations

In 1993 Bernd Bircks left the band; he was replaced by keyboardist and pianist Oliver Frank. After joining the band, they built their own recording studio, in which they record all of their CDs to this day. After a few attempts with new producers, they met their old companion Harald Steinhauer again and they recorded a new album together. With songs like Keine was wie du , Bossa Nova Baby , Zerbrich mein Herz and Schlagerzeit they were again in the radio charts and appeared more often on television.

In 1995 Werner Heizenreder left the band. Several drummers took his place in the following years: Henrik Ferstl, Reinhold Warmer and Robert Gorzawsky. Oliver Frank decided to leave Cagey Strings in 2003 in order to start his own music project. Keyboardist Kurt Heilmaier joined the band for him. Heilmaier and Gorzawsky dropped out in 2012 for personal reasons, whereupon Oliver Frank (* 1969) returned to the band - bringing with him the Augsburg-born drummer Thomas Dessau (* 1966).

In 2017 Peter Biermeier ended his musical career with the Cagey Strings. Michael Peyerl (* 1987) on bass followed him at the turn of the year.

On March 9, 2018, the band's founder Georg "Schorsch" Angerer died unexpectedly at the age of 53.

After this hard stroke of fate, a time followed in which the band mastered the gigs with the help of befriended guitarists until Marinus Christof (* 1988) was won over as the new guitarist in July 2018.

style

Cagey Strings' own songs are inspired by the rock 'n' roll and hit era of the 1950s and 1960s. Most of them come from Harald Steinhauer , who worked with artists such as Nicki , Juliane Werding , Marianne Rosenberg , Peter Kent , Nino de Angelo , Geier Sturzflug and Spider Murphy Gang . Some songs were composed by the Cagey Strings themselves.

The content of the texts is mostly about love, women, men, relationships, which are interpreted ironically, humorously and critically.
