Cagole

A Cagole [ ka.ɡɔl ] is a female stereotype from Marseille and the surrounding region of southern France , to which certain character traits are assigned and which corresponds to a certain fashionable appearance. A cagole is considered extroverted, self-determined, warm-hearted and self-confident and is considered a characteristic symbol of the area. She speaks loudly and likes to be the center of attention.

Meaning of the term and origin of the name

In the 1950s, the term “cagole” was established for a vulgar woman from a simple background who emphasized her sexual charms and was later also understood as “ slut ” or “ slut ”.

The word comes from the Provencal language . There are two different theories about its derivation. On the one hand, it is assumed that it goes back to the term "cagoulo", which was the name for the aprons that were worn by workers whose job was to pack dates from industrial production. In order to improve their financial situation, some of these women prostituted themselves, which is why the term was used as a synonym for a whore .

According to another assumption, the term is derived from the French word "caguer" (Provencal "caga"), which translates as "shit" or "poop". A "cagole" should therefore be understood as a person who "pisses you off", meaning a person who is annoying.
