The Rellinger Church from 1756

Cay Dose (* around 1700 in Friedrichsgabekoog ; † July 27, 1768 in Copenhagen ) also Kai Dose , Kay Dose , Caj Dose or Cai Dose , was a Holstein architect and builder of the 18th century.

Life and works

Cay Dose was the son of Senior Secretary Ernst Ulrich Dose. He was later trained as a master builder by the general builder Johan Conrad Ernst from 1724 to 1735 in Copenhagen . He then moved to Alsen for a few years .

The main church of St. Trinitatis in Altona

In 1739, Dose moved into a small apartment in Schleswig . There he met the engineer-captain Otto Johann Müller, who recommended him for the construction of the St. Trinity Church in Hamburg-Altona . After an appraisal of the nave, he suggested that it be demolished while preserving the tower built by Jacob Bläser. On April 11, 1742, construction of the St. Trinity Church began under his direction. In 1743 he renewed the roof and parts of the Schleswig Cathedral and put a new roof turret on the Michaeliskirche in Schleswig in 1745/46 . A little later, Dose submitted the plans for the construction of the monastery church in Uetersen , but these were not taken into account as Jasper Carstens had already been appointed as the builder.

The church of Brande-Hörnerkirchen

Dose's works also included the church in Brande-Hörnerkirchen , which has an octagonal floor plan and was ceremoniously inaugurated on February 27, 1752. This church burned down in 1934 and was rebuilt in 1936 based on the model of the old church. Also in Brande-Hörnerkirchen, Dose built the sexton's house and the pastorate in 1750/51 . After that, Dose applied in vain for the reconstruction of St. Michaelis Church in Hamburg , which burned down after a lightning strike in 1750. Four years later, his proposals for the roof structure of the church were rejected. It was not until 1754 that he received another contract to build the Rellinger Church , which he built based on the model of the church in Brande-Hörnerkirchen. Thanks to its concept of octagonal construction, this church building could be built in much larger dimensions. With around 2000 seats, it is the largest octagonal church in northern Germany . The two octagonal churches were also the model for the church built by Heinrich Schmidt on Niendorfer Markt .

From 1756 to 1757 the late Gothic Nicolaikirche in Treia was extended to the west according to Dose's designs. In 1758 he submitted plans for a palace at the east end of the Palmaille in Altona for Christian VI. a. These plans were rejected in the same year, and the castle was never built. In the same year he began the renovation of the Nikolaikirche in Aabenraa and a year later he built the pastorate of the Michaeliskirche in Schleswig (demolished in 1972). From 1760 he worked for the Danish royal widow Sophie Magdalena of Denmark and later tried in vain to succeed the royal court building inspector Jakob Fortlink.
