history

predecessor

Another Caio Duilio class was in service with the Italian Navy from 1873 to 1909. The two 12,000-ton ships of this class, the Caio Duilio and the Enrico Dandolo, were way ahead of their time and soon led to French and British counter-designs. The ships of this class had, among other things, four 450 mm guns and a vertical armor of 550 mm.

New building

The ships were built during the First World War and extensively modernized from 1937 to 1940. In doing so, they were brought up to the technical standard of the Littorio class as much as possible . The two battleships took part in some skirmishes and naval battles between the Italian and British fleets in the Mediterranean during World War II , otherwise they secured Italian convoys to North Africa. They were decommissioned in 1956.
