Beaches and bays in Mallorca

Cala Moreia (' Moray Bay ') is a bay in the east of the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . It is located on the coast of the town of S'Illot , which is divided between the municipalities of Manacor and Sant Llorenç des Cardassar .

Location and description

S'Illot ('the island') in front of the beach

The Cala Moreia is located about 800 meters southwest of the Punta de n'Amer peninsula . The bay is bordered by the capes sa Punteta in the north and Punta Moreia with its offshore small island s'Illot in the south. The distance between the two points is around 580 meters. The small rock island, from which the place S'Illot owes its name, is only 24 meters off the coast.

Beach of sa Punteta

There are two beaches at Cala Moreia . In the northwest of the bay is the moderately frequented Platja de sa Punteta ('Sa Punteta Beach'). The partly rocky, coarse sand beach is 100 meters long and 10 meters wide. Apart from the hinterland, it is natural. The beach belongs to the municipality of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar.

The main beach in the south of the bay is the 350 meters long and 35 meters wide Platja de s'Illot ('Beach of S'Illot'). The beach belonging to the municipality of Manacor consists of fine sand, which is cleaned daily during the season. Like the neighboring Platja de sa Coma , it slopes gently into the sea. Large parts of the beach have parasols and loungers for hire. At the north end of the beach opens torrent Torrent de Ca n'Amer . It forms the border with the municipality of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar.

The coast of Cala Moreia is part of the tourist town of S'Illot. Behind the Platja de s'Illot and the promenade to the north are multi-storey buildings, mostly hotels. A pedestrian bridge leads the Camí de la Mar promenade over the Torrent de Ca n'Amer to the southern part of Manacor. A brackish water pond about 300 meters long extends below and to the west of the bridge . The Talaiotic settlement of S'Illot was discovered and excavated about 100 meters west of the coast and northeast of the torrent . It is testimony to the prehistoric settlement of Mallorca, a megalithic culture known as the Talaiot culture .

Access

Coming from a roundabout on the MA-4023 road between Cala Millor and Porto Cristo , the MA-4021 leads from Son Carrió directly to the northern district of S'Illot, which belongs to Sant Llorenç des Cardassar. There it turns into Carrer Rosa dels Vents , which leads to the sea on the southwest side of the Talaiotic settlement of S'Illot.
