Luigi Calamatta (born June 21, 1801 in Civitavecchia , Italy , † March 8, 1869 in Milan ) was an Italian engraver , draftsman and knight of the Legion of Honor .

Life

Luigi Calamatta attended the Paris engraving school from 1822 . His copperplate engravings first reproduced the works of contemporary masters, such as Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (Louis XIII's vow) , Ary Scheffer (Francesca da Rimini) , as well as various portraits , among which the sheet after the death mask of Napoléon Bonaparte is best known.

Later he also turned to older Italian masters and published, for example, the Vision of Ezekiel, the Madonna della Sedia and da Foligno after Raphael , the Mona Lisa (1837) after Leonardo da Vinci , the Beatrice Cenci (1857) after Giulio Romano .

In 1837 Calamatta was appointed professor at the copper engraving school in Brussels and received the cross of the Legion of Honor. In 1851 he published a collection of the famous men of Belgium in engravings, as well as other sheets after Belgian masters (such as Jean Baptiste Madou and Alfred Stevens ).

After the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy , he was appointed professor at the copper engraving school at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera . Luigi Calamatta was a correct draftsman and knew how to reproduce the color effect of the originals perfectly.
