Callitris canescens is a plant from the family of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). It is native to southern Australia.

description

Callitris canescens grows as an evergreen shrub or tree that can reach heights of up to 6 meters. The branches go up straight from the trunk.

The gray-green to blue-green leaves are 2 to 3 millimeters long and are rounded on the back.

The male cones are solitary, rarely in pairs on the branches and are egg-shaped with a length of up to 3 millimeters. The female cones stand individually or in groups on the branches and are shaped with a diameter of up to 2 centimeters wide-ovoid to flattened-spherical. Each cone contains six thick cone scales. The numerous black seeds have two or three wings which are up to 2 millimeters wide. Some of the seeds are only released from the cones years after they have ripened.

Occurrence and endangerment

The natural range of Callitris canescens consists of two separate occurrences, which include the southwestern Western Australia and the southeastern Southern Australia . In Western Australia, it stretches from Kellerberrin Shire to Southern Cross and south to Ravensthorpe Shire . In Southern Australia, Callitris canescens is found on the Eyre and Yorke Peninsula .

Callitris canescens grows on different types of soil . Most often it occurs on sandy, loamy or calcareous soils.

Callitris canescens is in the red list of the IUCN classified as "least concern" = "not at risk". It is pointed out, however, that a new review of the hazard is necessary.

Systematics

It was first described as Frenela canescens in 1868 by Filippo Parlatore in Prodromus Systematis Naturalis Regni Vegetabilis , Volume 16 (2), page 448. Stanley Thatcher Blake presented this species in 1959 as Callitris canescens in Proceedings of the Royal Society of Queensland , Volume 70, page 39 into the genus Callitris .
