Callitris preissii is a plant from the family of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). It is native to southern Australia.

description

Branch with ripe cones

Callitris preissii grows as an evergreen shrub or tree that can reach heights of up to 20 meters. It seldom forms multiple trunks. The branches go straight or upright from the trunk and can occasionally be stunted.

The gray to blue-green leaves are 2 to 4 millimeters long and their reverse side is rounded.

The male cones are in groups on the branches and are cylindrical in shape with a length of up to 5 millimeters. The egg-shaped to flattened-spherical female cones stand together on a stem individually or in groups and have a diameter of 2 to 3.5 centimeters. Each cone contains six thick cone scales and numerous seeds. The cones remain on the branches for a few years after they have ripened before they release the seeds and fall off. The dark brown seeds are about 4 millimeters in size and have two or three wings.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Occurrence and endangerment

The natural range of Callitris preissii is in the Australian states of New South Wales , Victoria , South Australia and southwestern Western Australia .

Callitris preissii grows on calcareous sandy soils that have formed on old coastal dunes .

Callitris preissii is in the red list of the IUCN classified as "not at risk" in 1998 as "least concern" =. It is pointed out that a renewed examination of the hazard is necessary.

use

Callitris preissii is used as an ornamental wood .

The Aborigines along the Murray River made spears about four meters long from the wood, which were used both for fishing and for pinning canoes. The resin was used to attach barbs to the spears.

The species produces an Australian sandarak .

Systematics

It was first described as Callitris preissii in 1845 by Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel in Plantae Preissianae , Volume 1, Page 643.

Callitris preissii is divided into up to two subspecies:

  • Callitris oblonga subsp. murrayensis J.Garden grows as a tree that can reach heights of up to 20 meters. The cones are usually thicker than 2.5 centimeters. This subspecies occurs in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia where it grows mainly in the Murray River valley . A synonym is Callitris propinqua R.Br. ex R.Baker & HGSmith .
  • Callitris preissii subsp. preissii is the nominate form . It grows as a tree with straight or upright branches branching off the trunk. The cones are 2.5 to 3 centimeters thick. One finds this subspecies in the entire distribution area. Synonyms are Callitris gracilis Baker and Callitris robusta R.Br. ex Bailey

Callitris preissii forms natural hybrids with Callitris glaucophylla .
