Calocoris roseomaculatus

Calocoris roseomaculatus is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 6.5 to 8.0 millimeters long. They are easy to recognize by their characteristic pink spots on the hemielytras . Your scutellum is divided by a dark line. The head, pronotum, and legs can also be tinted pink. The second part of the antennae is shorter than the third and fourth combined. The species is somewhat similar to Closterotomus norwegicus . Calocoris roseomaculatus is very variable, so that differently colored animals were sometimes described as separate species in the past. Today there are several subspecies.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is common in Europe and Asia. In Central Europe only the subspecies Calocoris roseomaculatus roseomaculatus occurs, which occurs in almost all of Europe and the western Mediterranean as well as east to Russia and the Ukraine. The species is widespread in Germany and usually common, only in the North German lowlands it is not so common. It does not occur frequently in Austria either.

A great many different habitats are settled, from temperature-favored limestone and sand habitats to wetlands. You can find them in open as well as shady places from the lowlands to montane locations. However, the species prefers to live in open, dry and warm places at higher altitudes.

Way of life

The bugs are apparently polyphag and suck on different plant families, but they prefer daisy family (Asteraceae). They are found mainly on chrysanthemums ( Chrysanthemum ), yarrow ( Achillea ), camomiles ( Matricaria ), wild flowers ( Tanacetum ), water dost ( Eupatorium ), Artemisia , knapweed ( Centaurea ) and hawkweeds ( Hieracium ), but also on legumes (Fabaceae) ). The anthers, ovaries and immature seeds of the host plants are vacuumed.
