history

The Neustadt was never an independent place with a municipal council (like the Hünerdorf ), but has always been considered a settlement area south of Calvörde. It was first mentioned in 1369. Around 1450, many smaller villages in the district of Calvörde became desolate . Most of the inhabitants of the now desert villages east of Calvörde (Ranten, Parwitz, Pachwitz, Nüntz and Hoiersdorf) settled in the new town. Not only Germans settled in the new town, but also Wends ( Slavs ). They did not have the same rights as the Germans in Calvörde (with the new town), but were treated like Calvörde among themselves. Most of the residents of the Neustadt were active in agriculture ; areas of the handicraft were also represented, such as shoemakers, carpenters, linen weavers, brewers and tailors. In 1571 the area around Calvörde became part of the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel as the Amt Calvörde . The office was given to a bailiff who was also a judge. This bailiff had his seat in the new town, because here was the official property (seat of the court and the residence) of the bailiff.

Fires

In the centuries from 1500 there were very often city fires that cremated Calvörde and the new town. In 1700 a fire took place that cremated Calvörde, but not the Neustadt. In 1745, however, the new town with its 21 houses burned down. After the fire, the streets in the new town became significantly wider, and the houses had to be tiled.

Buildings in the new town

There are numerous historical buildings in Calvörder Neustadt:

  • The "Black Eagle", a mansion and a restaurant. It was a particularly important building because the Braunschweig princes and Prussian officers often stayed here as overnight accommodation for onward journeys.
  • The Calvörde Synagogue , the house of worship of the Jewish community in Calvörde .
  • The birthplace of the art historian and museum specialist Wilhelm von Bode . The Calvörde district court was once located in the house where he was born. Today it is the local museum of Calvörde.
  • The prison of the Amt Calvörde in Neustadtstrasse with the former prison yard.

monument

On Zimmerplatz, south of Neustadt, there is a small war memorial to commemorate the victory of the Germans against the " hereditary enemy " France of 1871.
