Calvin Pollard

Calvin Pollard (born June 14, 1797 in New Braintree ; Massachusetts ; † 1850 ) was an American architect , best known for his early design of the Brooklyn Borough Hall . He also designed numerous other buildings in New York .

Today, many of Pollard's documents are in the New York Public Library .

Life

Pollard was born to John Pollard and Kezia Heyward. His family moved to Cazenovia in 1803 , and to New York City in 1818 .

Career

In 1834, Pollard designed, among other things, St. Paul's Episcopal Church and Rectory in Ossining , which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 . In the same year he won a competition to design the Brooklyn City Hall . After the foundation of the building was constructed, construction was stopped due to financial difficulties and in 1845 Gamaliel King took over the work.

In 1836, Pollard built the Brandreth Pill Factory in Ossining, which has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980.

The courthouse in Petersburg, Virginia was built by Pollard from 1838 to 1840, and it is also one of his last works. The building played a role during the Siege of Petersburg and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973.
