Camarate (grape variety)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Camarate is an autochthonous red wine from Portugal. Their cultivation is recommended in the areas of Beira Litoral, Ribatejo and Oeste . It is also approved in the Trás-os-Montes , Beira Interior and Azores areas . Today the forested area in Portugal is around 690 hectares , after it was 947 hectares in 1989. The variety was very popular until the 19th century. Due to their susceptibility to powdery mildew and raw rot , the stocks are steadily decreasing.

The variety produces dark red, tannic , fruity red wines with aromas of forest berries, raspberries and spices.

A check by means of DNA analysis showed that the grape variety is a cross of the varieties Cayetana Blanca x Alfrocheiro Preto Camarate is related to the varieties Malvasia Preta , Mouraton , Cornifesto Tinto and Periquita due to the same crossing partners .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. She is hairy white wool. The yellowish, bronze-colored speckled young leaves are slightly woolly hairy.
  • The medium-sized leaves are five-lobed and slightly indented. The stem bay is closed. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are set closely in comparison to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is usually smooth and only slightly blistered near the base of the stem.
  • The cylindrical grape is small to medium-sized, lightly shouldered and with dense berries. The round berries are medium-sized and blue-black in color.

The early growing grape variety ripens approx. 10 - 12 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen early within the red grape varieties, so that it can also mature in the relatively cool regions of the north in Portugal.

Camarate is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
