The Cambridge Gulf is a bay in the northeast of the Australian state of Western Australia . It is in the Kimberley region .

geography

Several rivers flow into this bay, such as the Ord River , the Pentecost River , the Durack River , the King River and the Forrest River .

In the Cambridge Gulf there are two tides per day with tide heights of 7 m to 9 m.

The city of Wyndham , the most important port in the Kimberley region, is located on the east bank of the bay, approximately 120 km north of the city of Kununurra . The Cambridge Gulf is part of the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf .

In the hinterland of the west coast of the Cambridge Gulf there are high sandstone hills that reach heights of 30 to 250 m. On the coast there are extensive mangrove colonies and at low tide there are also tidal flats. Adolphus Island lies at the southern end of the bay and splits it into a navigable west arm , on which the city of Wyndham is located, and an east arm , into which the Ord River flows.

history

The Gulf got its name from Philip Parker King , who landed aboard the Mermaid on this coast in 1819 , but soon left it because he could not find any fresh water in the mudflats at the edges of the bay. King named the Gulf after the then Duke of Cambridge , Prince Adolphus . Alexander Forrest was the next European to explore the area in 1879 and in 1884 the first settlers landed in Wyndham Harbor, moving inland to raise cattle and later to look for gold. During the boom around 1886, up to 16 ships often anchored in the Cambridge Gulf and waited for a landing stage in Wyndham Harbor.
