License plate (Libya)
The license plates in Libya are similar in appearance to the license plates used in Europe . Signs for private vehicles have a white background and black text. On the left they show two blocks of numbers separated by a very short hyphen, of which the left, maximum two-digit number stands for the place of origin (e.g. 5 for Tripoli ) and the right represents a consecutive serial number. On the far right, according to the reading of the Arabic at the beginning, the writing جماهيرية ( Jamahirija ) is on older signs and, as a result of the Libyan civil war in 2011, the word ليبيا (Libya) is on newer signs.
Signs of foreign companies or residents show a blue field on the left, in which a number provides information about the respective country of origin. Taxis have yellow license plates that start with one more Arabic letter. For two-line labels, the serial number is on the bottom line. Diplomatic license plates show black letters on a red background.
Before the revolution, foreign vehicles passing through were given green and yellow customs plates (diagonal field separation, black writing). Only those foreign license plates that did not contain Latin letters were excluded from this regulation.
