description

Appearance and leaf

Camellia petelotii grows as an evergreen shrub or tree and rarely reaches heights of 1.5 to, usually 2 to 5 meters. The bark of young twigs is grayish-brown, in the second year it becomes purple-brown and 2 to 3 mm thick and hairless.

The alternate leaves arranged on the branches are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The bald petiole is 1 to 2 inches long. The simple leathery leaf blade is elliptical with a length of 9 to 18, rarely up to 23 centimeters and a width of 3 to 6, rarely up to 7.5 centimeters. The upper side of the leaf is glossy dark green and the underside of the leaf is light green with brown spots.

Flower, fruit and seeds

The flowers are solitary or in pairs in the leaf axils. The rarely six to, usually eight to ten leathery, smooth bracts have a length of 2 to 3 mm and a width of 3 to 5 mm and have a hairy edge. The upright flower stalk is rarely 5 to, usually 10 to 15 mm long.

The flowering period extends from November to February. The hermaphroditic flowers are seldom 2 to, mostly 5 to 6 centimeters in diameter, with radial symmetry . The five egg-shaped, leathery sepals have a size of (4 to) 6 to 8 × 6 to 9 mm, are bald or tomentose inside and have a hairy edge. Of the fleshy, golden yellow 10 to 14 petals , the four or five outer petals have a size of 1.5 to 2 × 1 to 1.5 centimeters with a hairy edge, the inner petals have a size of 2 to 3.5 × 1.4 to 1.8 centimeters and are fused 6 to 8 mm long at their base. The many smooth stamens have a length of 2 to 2.5 centimeters. In the outer circle of the stamen, the stamens have grown together to form a 7 to 10 mm long tube. Three carpels are a spherical, smooth ovary deformed, which has a diameter of about 2.5 mm. The three free styles are 1.5 to 2 inches long.

The two- to three-fold capsule fruit has a size of (1.2 to) 2.5 to 3.5 × (1.5 to) 4 to 6 centimeters. Each fruit compartment contains three seeds. The spherical, brown seeds have a diameter of 1.5 to 2 centimeters and are sparsely hairy yellowish-brown tomentose. The fruits ripen between September and November.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 30.

Occurrence

Camellia petelotii is native to southern China's Guangxi Autonomous Region and northern Vietnam . In Guangxi it grows in forests along rivers at altitudes of 100 to 900 meters.

Systematics

It was first published under the name ( Basionym ) Thea petelotii by Elmer Drew Merrill . The new combination to Camellia petelotii was made by Joseph Robert Sealy .

There are two varieties of Camellia petelotii :

  • Camellia petelotii (. Merr) Sealy . Var petelotii ( Syn. : Thea petelotii Merr. , Camellia achrysantha HungT.Chang & S.YeLiang , Camellia chrysantha ( Hu ) Tuyama , Camellia chrysantha f. Longistyla S.L.Mo & YCZhong , Camellia nitidissima C.W.Chi , Camellia nitidissima var. Phaeopubisperma S.YeLiang & ZHTang , Theopsis chrysantha Hu . Camellia chrysantha literally means: "Golden-flowered camellia", Chinese   金花茶 , Pinyin jinhuā chá ). By the Flora of China Editorial Committee, 2007. Flora of China Volume 12, the name was set to Camellia petelotii (Merr.) Sealy var. Petelotii . It grows in southern Guangxi and northern Vietnam at altitudes between 200 and 900 meters. It is threatened by habitat loss . A nature reserve ( 防城 上 岳 金花茶 自然保护区 , English: Fangcheng Golden Camellia National Nature Reserve ) has been set up for them in the Nasuo ( 那 梭 镇 ) community of Fangcheng in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region . The shiny, bright green leaves are 9 to 18 (rarely up to 23) cm in length and 3 to 6 (rarely up to 7.5) wide. There are eight to ten bracts. The flower stalk is about 1 to 1.5 cm long. The hermaphrodite flower has a diameter of 5 to 6 cm. The sepals are smooth. There are nine to eleven petals available. The flowering period extends from January to February. The triple capsule fruit has a size of 2.5 to 3.5 × 4 to 6 cm. The fruits ripen between October and November.
  • Camellia petelotii var. Microcarpa (SLMO & SZHuang) TLMing & WJZhang (Syn .: Camellia chrysantha var. Microcarpa S.L.Mo & SZHuang , Camellia microcarpa (SLMO & SZHuang) SLMO , Camellia nitidissima var. Microcarpa (SLMO & SZHuang) HungT.Chang & CXYe ): It only grows in southern Guangxi. The elliptical leaf blade has a length of 10 to 14 cm and a width of 4 to 6 cm. There are six bracts. The flower stalk is about 5 mm long. The flowers are 2 to 3 cm in diameter. The inside of the sepals is felty white. The flowering period extends from November to December. The double capsule fruit has a size of 1.2 to 1.5 × 1.5 to 2.5 cm.
