The club was founded in 1919 and plays its home games in the Stadio Nuovo Romagnoli , which can seat 25,000 spectators. Campobasso has played in Serie B for five years and is currently in Serie D , the fourth-highest division in Italy .

history

The association Società Sportiva Dilettantistica Città di Campobasso was founded in 1919 in Campobasso , a town with now around 50,000 inhabitants and capital of the province of the same name in the Italian region of Molise . Initially, the association was called US Campobasso , and over the years there have been numerous name changes and new foundations. The largest club in Campobasso was newly founded in 1948, 1990, 1996, 2003 and 2013, each of which had been preceded by significant financial problems that led to the club's short-term dissolution. The Stadio Nuovo Romagnoli has served as the stadium for SSD Campobasso since 1985, with a capacity of 25,000 spectators. Designed by the great stadium architect and long-time president of the Ascoli Calcio association , Costantino Rozzi , the construction of this relatively large arena coincided with the heyday of what was then Campobasso Calcio . Two years after opening, the club was relegated from Serie B and has never been promoted to this day. With the stadium project, Campobasso also plunged close to the financial abyss, in 1990 the second re-establishment in the club's history took place. The stadium is now almost completely underutilized and is simply far too big for fourth-rate Serie D games .

The US Campobasso spent the first years of its existence in the lower divisions of Italian football. 1959 succeeded the first jump into the series D, where they stayed eleven years before relegating to the promozione again. Returning to Serie D in 1972, Campobasso rose to Serie C for the first time only three years later and was subsequently able to establish himself there. With the division of Serie C into Serie C1 and Serie C2 for the 1978/79 season, Campobasso Calcio qualified for Serie C1, i.e. for the third highest division. And there, too, the team knew how to improve quickly and in the third division season 1981/82 managed to place second in Girone B only behind AC Arezzo and rose to Serie B for the first time in the club's history. Under coach Antonio Pasinato , from 1981 to 1984 under contract with the club, as a climber with thirteenth place, relegation was relatively safe. This marked the beginning of the years when people in Campobasso lived well above their own means, of which the construction of the Stadio Nuovo Romagnoli is just one example. In the 1983/84 season they took a strong seventh place in Serie B, which is the best placement ever by Campobasso in the second division. Then Pasinato resigned as coach of the team and was the new coach at Brescia Calcio , his successor in the coaching bench of Campobasso Calcio was Giancarlo Cadè . Under his and Bruno Mazzia's aegis, the club finished Serie B in 1984/85 on a midfield position, which could be repeated the following year. In 1987, however, the time had come when Campobasso Calcio, which was so ambitious a few years ago, disappeared from the second division as seventeenth in Serie B only because of the worse goal difference compared to Taranto Calcio and Lazio Rome .

Campobasso Calcio never really recovered from this relegation. In 1990 the now fourth-class club was insolvent and was re-established as FC Campobasso . Just six years later the same game was repeated, the club was called AC Campobasso from 1996 . After returning to the C2 series in the meantime, the third bankruptcy followed in thirteen years in 2003, when Polisportiva Nuovo Campobasso Calcio started again in the Eccellenza Molise. After that, the financially poor club slowly stabilized and over time managed to return to the fourth league, which is now running as Lega Pro Seconda Divisione. There Campobasso suffered the fifth bankruptcy in the club's history in 2013, which again ended in a re-establishment and restart in the Eccellenza. As US Campobasso in 1919 , he immediately returned to Serie D, after which the club was renamed SSD Città di Campobasso . Campobasso started under this name in the D series in 2014/15.
