Game of the Year : Shortlist 1981, 1982

Can't Stop is a dice board game by Sid Sackson .

The aim of the game is to reach the top in three columns. Each player can decide in each turn how often he wants to roll the dice. The more often he rolls the dice, the greater the risk of losing what he has achieved on this turn.

The game was used in 2008 as one of four disciplines within the German team championship in the board game .

history

In 1974 The Great Races appeared in the game collection The 6 Pack of Paper & Pencil Games published by Gamut of Games . This game is considered the predecessor of Can't Stop. The Great Races was then republished in 1978 in the January / February issue of Games Magazine .

In 1980 the game appeared with slightly changed rules and a simple layout as Can't Stop at Parker Brothers . In Spain the game was distributed by Borras Plana as Basta and in France by Miro Meccano . The German edition was published by Parker in 1981. This edition was then on the shortlist for Game of the Year 1981 and 1982. Franjos brought the game out in Germany in 1991 with a new layout (Bergsteiger). In 1998 Can't Stop became the third game in the board game world . In 2005 Franjos published a new edition. Another, graphically more elaborate French edition was published by Asmodée Editions in 2006 . Finally, in 2007 Ravensburger licensed the game from Franjos and released Can't Stop again with a simple layout in several languages. Since then, the Ravensburger layout has also been used in the board game world. Face 2 Face Games has been selling a trilingual version of this new Ravensburger edition since 2007 in North America. Since 2011 at the latest, the license has been with Franjos again. A new version appeared there (again in the mountaineer design), Ravensburger points out on its website that the license would no longer be available.

Game material

The game board consists of eleven columns, which are numbered 2 to 12. The columns consist of 3 - 13 fields. The number of fields corresponds roughly to the probability with which the column number can be rolled with 2 dice. The game also includes:

  • 4 dice
  • 44 game pieces, 11 each in 4 colors
  • 3 bishops (white pieces)

regulate

Three-player game

In each round, the players take turns one after the other. The player throws the 4 dice and forms 2 pairs. The eyes of the pairs of dice are added up and result in 2 numbers of columns in which you can now draw. The player decides how to calculate the sums.

If there is no bishop in the column that is rolled, one is placed at the bottom of the column and moved one space. If there is already a runner in the column rolled, he is moved one space further. Then the player can, if he wants, continue to roll the dice, with the risk of having to reset all the pieces that were used. This happens when all bishops are on the board and the possible sums of the two dice pairs only result in numbers of columns in which there are no bishops. Then the move is over and the player must remove all bishops from the board. It is the next player's turn.

The player can freely decide how long he wants to roll the dice. When he finishes his turn, the bishops are replaced by a piece of the color chosen by the player. It is the next player's turn. The first player to reach the top in 3 columns wins.

strategy

In a game of dice, luck is crucial. There are 2 basic strategies:

  1. only roll the dice as long as there are free bishops - not yet placed on the board. A sliderless column can always be equipped with sliders. If the last free runner has to be placed, you stop rolling the dice. Progress is slow but sure.
  2. after all free bishops have been placed, continue to roll the dice and hope that the sums of two dice can always be used to form the number of a column in which a bishop is already standing. If you are lucky you can go very far.

It makes sense to keep a runner outside the playing field for as long as possible and, if possible, to create the numbers of columns in which a runner is already standing (strategy 1). Then strategy 2 is carefully used and the move is ended at the right moment.
