Martin Weyer

Martin Weyer (born November 16, 1938 in Cammin , Pomerania ; † December 24, 2016 in Marburg ) was a German musicologist and organist .

Life

Weyer graduated from high school Andreanum in Hildesheim the Abitur. He then studied in Hanover and Cologne ; there he passed the A-examination with Hans Klotz in 1966 . He studied French music and Bach with Marie-Claire Alain in Paris . In addition to training as an organist, he also studied German , philosophy and musicology ; for school music he passed the exam in 1964. In 1969 he received his doctorate on "The German Organ Sonata from Bach to Reger" with Klaus Wolfgang Niemöller in Cologne.

From 1966 he worked as a lecturer at the Musicological Institute, as a university music director and a few years later as a professor of musicology at the Philipps University of Marburg . From 1970 to 1985 he worked as an organist at the Elisabeth Church , after his retirement at the Lutheran Parish Church in Marburg until the end of his life . During this period he presented several world premieres with the university's choir and orchestra, including works by Joachim Blume , Wolfgang Stockmeier and Alan Gibbs . For the various occasions of organ playing he gave - z. Partly with Gunther Martin Göttsche - practical ("easy to moderate") organ preludes. In the course of his concert activities as an organist, he made radio recordings as well as recordings on LP and CD. He accompanied the summer concerts at Haina Monastery for around 20 years.

His main research interests in Marburg were music from Scandinavia and the United States as well as the history of Protestant church music . Weyer has published a complete account of the organ works by Max Reger and Josef Gabriel Rheinberger and is co-author of an organ music guide.

He was married to the church musician Hildegard Weyer, b. Oldekopp. The couple had two sons.

Martin Weyer died on December 24, 2016 at the age of 78 in Marburg. In an obituary in Ars Organi , one of the most important journals on the subject of organ building and organ music, the organ historian Gerhard Aumüller paid tribute to him with the following words:

"In his 50 years as a church musician, university music director and professor in Marburg, Martin Weyer has set an example of how to harmoniously combine artistry, scientific work, humor, goodness and inner wealth."
