Candidus Zapfl

Candidus Zapfl OCist (born February 28, 1829 in Rein, Eisbach ; † February 28, 1900 ) was the 47th abbot of the Rein Cistercian monastery in Styria .

Candidus Zapfl was born on February 28, 1829 in Rein, a district of the municipality of Eisbach . In 1849 he joined the Rein Abbey and was ordained a priest in 1853 . He first served as a chaplain in the collegiate parish church and was appointed provost of Maria Straßengel in 1858 . In 1861 he became master of the monastery of the newly elected abbot Vinzenz Knödl (1821–1890) and managed the monastery house and farm for 13 years. He then became the administrator of the Rohr Stiftsgut near Wildon. Zapfl was elected abbot of Rein Abbey on April 29, 1891. In the same year he was also appointed Vicar General of the General Chapter of the Cistercian Order in Austria. However, he resigned this office on October 25, 1893. In 1891 he was also named as the prince-bishop consistorial councilor .
