Alexander Bauer was born as the son of a school teacher in St. Pankrazen in Styria. On November 6, 1873, he made his perpetual profession in the Rein monastery and took the religious name of Francis Sales. He was ordained a priest on February 12, 1874 . From 1875 he was choirmaster of the monastery until he served as clerical prefect in Graz from 1889. In 1890 he resigned from this position when he was appointed mayor on March 1, before he was elected abbot on June 26, 1900. His benediction took place on July 19, 1900. He also acted as consistorial councilor and in 1908 was commander of the Franz Joseph Order . His extensive activities also included his function as chairman of the board of trustees of the Association for the Control of Tuberculosis in Styria and as a lawyer representative of the Association of the Agricultural Cooperative in Styria as well as his membership in the Graz-Umgebung district committee and the Eisbach-Rein community. Furthermore, as an enthusiastic ornithologist , he was an honorary member of the poultry breeding association. He collected violins and had a natural history cabinet built in Rein.

Resignation as dept

After complaints from the Reiner Konvent in 1909 against Abbot Franz Sales Bauer due to dissatisfaction with his financial management and a complaint at the end of November, five Fathers openly demanded his resignation on December 2nd of that year. After a three-day examination by the vicar general (the title of today's abbot praeses ) from December 2nd to 5th, 1909, the abbot was released on a two-year vacation to restore his health, which he had to spend outside of Styria. In the meantime, one of the main complainants, P. Ernst Kortschak, was appointed prior regens and charged with managing the monastery. The abbot's resignation followed on December 5th . Although the mood in the monastery seems to have calmed down towards the abbot in 1911, Korchak's appointment as prior rainy was extended in March 1912. Just two months later, on May 31, 1912, Franz Sales Bauer died in Mayerling and was buried in Rein.
