Candita Batista

Candita Batista Batista (born October 3, 1916 in Camagüey , Cuba ; † April 1, 2016 ibid) was a Cuban singer. She was an important representative of Afro-Cuban music. Well known in Cuba, she performed all over the world, including Latin America, Europe and Africa.

Life

Candita Batista was born in a simple family in the area of ​​the then "El Senado" known sugar factory (today: "Noel Fernández") north of Minas in the Camagüey province, where she grew up until her early youth. The family then moved to the provincial capital Camagüey , where they also performed initially and became an integral part of the local music scene. Her career began there in 1932, and since 1936 she has worked as a professional musician. In 1937 she came to the capital Havana , where she first appeared in various theaters and opera houses. In 1941 she made her debut at the Martí Theater in Havana as the protagonist of the Compañía Batamú , the first Afro-Cuban artist group. A trip through Latin America followed, where she performed in Mexico , Guatemala , Honduras , El Salvador , Costa Rica , Panama , and Colombia . This was followed by an extensive tour through Europe and North Africa, which she performed in Spain , Portugal , Belgium , the Netherlands , Finland , Switzerland , Sweden , Denmark , Italy , France , Germany and Morocco . She sang at the Olympia in Paris , where she made her most famous appearances. Some of the most prominent stars she appeared on stage with included Charles Aznavour , Maurice Chevalier , Nat King Cole , Dizzy Gillespie and Josephine Baker .

The singer stood on stage for more than eighty years. Her repertoire included mainly Cuban music styles such as Son , Pregón , Guaracha , Rumba , Bolero and folk songs.

One of their most famous songs is Angelitos Negros . Other well-known songs are Ritmo de Santa and El Dulce .

It was presented to German and French television audiences in a documentary about the very elderly Cubans that was first broadcast in 2013.
