Canina Nera

Canina Nera is a red grape variety that is grown in the Italian regions of Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany. Although their cultivation is recommended in the metropolitan city of Bologna and the provinces of Forlì-Cesena , Ravenna , Pisa and Pistoia , the area under vines in the 1990s was a moderate 307 hectares , as the cultivation of the Sangiovese variety is more beneficial. Smaller plantings are also known in Argentina and France .

According to the ampelographers Nino Breviglieri and Enrico Casini, the grape variety is similar to the Canaiolo nero variety , but not identical.

Synonyms

The Canina Nera grape variety is also known under the names Cagnina, Canena, Canina, Canina Grossa, Canina dal Raspo, Canina di Forli, Canina di Ravenna, Canina Picola Lunga, Canino toscano, Cannina and Uva Canina.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is very hairy with white wool and the tips are colored carmine red. The bronze-colored young leaves are only hairy with white wool.
  • The medium-sized leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented. The stem bay is open U-shaped. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are cut extremely deep compared to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is blistered and rough.
  • The conical to cylindrical grape is medium-sized and has dense berries. The round berries are medium-sized and reddish-blue in color. The berry peel is crisp and firm. The juice of the berry is slightly pink.

The grape variety ripens about 30 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen late in international comparison. The variety can be harvested near Florence in early October.
