The Cannon Building is the oldest structure in Monument Square in Troy , New York and stands on Broadway between First Street and State Street. It was designed by Alexander Jackson Davis and built in 1835. The multi-story building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 5, 1970 and is a Contributing Property to the Central Troy Historic District , which was added to the register in 1986.

Davis, who worked with Ithiel Town on the design of the building , took advantage of the classicism popular at the time and created one of the few larger commercial buildings of the time in this style that has survived to our day. After two fires in the years after the American Civil War , a mansard roof was added to the structure , which corresponded to the architectural style of the Second Empire . Thus an unusual combination was created. The building currently serves as a retail and office building; the upper floors have been converted into an apartment hotel .

Buildings and history

The Cannon Building is a five-story house 22 bays in length and five in width. It is built from load-bearing brick walls , the joists inside are made of wood. The top floor with a cantilevered cornice is an extended mansard roof with bay windows .

Originally the house was only four stories high. During the renovation in 1870, the mansard roof was added. The eastern shop fronts are in their original condition. Towards the end of the 19th century, the building housed Frear's Troy Bazaar , then one of the best retail stores in town. Later users included a manufacturer of pianos and a jeweler .

In the early 21st century, film producer and construction investor Sandy Horowitz was looking for ways to write off gains on real estate sales in New York City, and a maker took him to Troy, where he bought the Cannon Building and several other properties in Monument Square. He had the top three floors converted into thirty residential units. These serve as a hotel for longer stays, which is mainly used by visiting professors at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Russell Sage College , as it is within walking distance of both institutions. As part of the renovation, a spa and internet café were also set up on the ground floor .
